Founder Optics FOT106 Triplet Apochromatic Refractor

This premium Triplet APO refractor from Founder Optics was designed in Japan and is manufactured in Taiwan.

The fully Multi-Coated Triplet optics include two ED glass elements, with a wide air space between each lens.

The FOT106 has outstanding colour and spherical correction. Views and images are sharp and have high contrast.

The FOT106 is machined and assembled to a very high standard at a factory with a long history and good relations with many Japanese brands.

Every telescope is tested, and an inspection report is included.

The FOT106 features a high-quality 2.7" Rack and Pinion focuser with two sets of 4 ball bearings between the drawtube and focuser cover.

An effective focuser locking knob ensures that the drawtube maintains alignment with the optical axis.

The focuser also features a 1:11 Dual Speed focuser with 95mm of focus travel. The maximum load capacity is 8kg.

Other features include a high-precision rotator to enable easy framing of targets.

The FOT106 includes a sliding retractable Dew Shield with three locking screws for dew shield stability and alignment.

Includes a Field Flattener with a corrected 44mm image circle and M42 (T) and M48 threads.

I was lucky enough to get one of FLO's ex-demo Founder FOT106, but you wouldn't know it wasn't new.
Out of the travel case it just looks like a quality scope, complete with an optical test report for your individual scope. Although this is a triplet, it still needs a field flattener for imaging but, unlike most Apo refractors, the Founder comes with the 1x Field Flattener supplied on the case. Strangely though, the Field Flattener is a 2" push-fit into the focuser, although you can buy an adaptor which replaces the 2" push-fit adaptor with a threaded one, which is much more suited for imaging. This what I went for, although it's not a cheap option.

The FOT106 focuser is a dream. The R&P system is smooth, accurate and easy to fine tune. I especially like the double rotator, one part rotates the whole focuser, the other just allows you to rotate you camera or eye piece and both are equally smooth to operate. The focuser comes with a lot of travel, handy when the focal point for your camera is 7 inches back from the scope. It also has a finder shoe, with fittings for a second one if you need it.

The optics are like the overall build quality, excellent. Using an ASI2600MC Pro camera, the stars are round right into the corners and the stacked images I've had from the scope to date are excellent across the FOV.
The dew shield is smooth to slide in & out and locks in place with three screws. If I have one issue with this scope, it's the lens cap, which is very good quality but attaches to the front of the dew shield with a fine screw thread. This takes time to put on & take off and you never really know when it's fully unscrewed, with the risk of it falling from the scope and damaging the cover.

The tube rings are CNC machined aluminium and the overall quality of the production continue into these. There's a handle supplied with the scope to make it easier to break down after each session and carry the scope. This has a dovetail on top for adding a guide scope if you wanted too. I've haven't fitted the handle as I have dovetail bar holding my guidescope on the tube rings.

Even the flight case is of good quality and gives good protection to the scope for shipping or storage.

Overall, this is a very well made refractor which is finished to perfection and has outstanding optics. Well worth a look if you're in the market for this size of scope.
