I bought this to primarily use as a grab and go visual scope and to complement my existing Skywatcher 120ED. The optics are great just like the 120ED producing sharp images and pinpoint stars. I replaced the focuser on my 120ED to a Moonlite due to reading some gripes a few folk had. This time I decided to see how the supplied focuser functioned before upgrading. I am pleased to say that the existing focuser is just fine. Most of the gripes are easily rectified by small adjustments. I use it on a Vixen Porta II mount which is ideal for low magnification sweeps of the night sky.
I wanted something a little more portable than my 200P DS and after a bit of research decided on the 80ED. I love this scope and it hasn't come off the mount since it arrived (the day after ordering and superbly packaged I hasten to add) . It feels well made and has great optics. The Pro outfit came with so many extras it almost felt like there must have been some mistake with the pricing.
I’ve long been a Skywatcher fan, having bought both the 100ED and 72ED previously, so now I’m moving up from the 72ED which in recent months has become redundant due to my imaging needs, and so that has now given way to the 80ED which is from the same stable, and still the same excellent build quality at a very reasonable price. Unfortunately the clouds which always seem to accompany a new purchase were no exception this time either, so I’m still awaiting a clear night to test out the scope and attached equipment, however the scope is really well made and finished and I have no doubt it will serve me well just as the other models have done, and if there were to be any issues I have the excellent FLO backup to rely on So absolutely no worries whatsoever.Delivery was an amazing 2 days, so the usual first class service.
Early days but first impressions impressive. Feels quality and I look forward to using it on many nights in the future
After several month of ownership, but only 5 nights of use I can give a quick review.Case and accessories supplied all as expected, and having the Evostar 80 in a small flightcase makes taking out to a field nice and easy. A lot easier than shifting my Bresser NT-150L around. A very easy scope for novices to use once set up one a mount, as have had friends and there children using the scope. All enjoyed using as seeing planets and the moon.Only down side the focuses had a very tight spot around 1 inch from fully in. Needed adjusting on the mounting screws of the Crayford Focuser to adjust and the top screws that push against the internal compression plates to get a nice smooth action. As these were so tight the rollers on the inside left marks down the focus tube.
I remember when these scopes have been introduced almost twenty years ago. They have very strong position in the astronomer's community ever since. There is a reason for that. They are great for astrophotography, superb grab and go scopes for visual and more. Wonderful optics for very little money in comparison to premium apo products. As an experienced astronomer I needed scope for visual (mainly lunar and planets). Coupled with AZ5 makes wonderful grab&go setup. Highly recommended.
Love this scope, it appears to be solid and well made, performance on the one time I've been able to use it (clouds of course) has been great. Performance from FLO has been just as good, from letting me know that the scope was in stock to receiving it took just two days. In this time of uncertainty(Covid) their service has been excellent.
From the moment I opened the Evostar 80ED package the stock focuser didn't work properly. It would only travel an inch or two before it started to slip. On fitting a heavier eyepiece it wouldn't move the draw tube at all. FLO were helpful as always, offering to take it back straight away. They even sent me some instructions to have a go at adjusting it myself, but unfortunately these didn't work for me. However at this point I decided that rather than return it I'd buy an upgraded focuser. After discussion and recommendation from FLO I bought a Baader Diamond Steeltrack to fit. Whilst this presented it's own challenges, I'm now very happy. The new focuser has given the scope a premium feel to match the superb optics. The rest of the DS-Pro Outfit package is great value for money, much better than I thought it would be. The Diagonal and Finder are decent quality and so is the 28mm eyepiece, which gives surprisingly good views. If it wasn't for the poor focuser I'd be giving this package 5 stars. But as it is I'll knock one off for the poor Skywatcher quality control in my case.
Great scope - pin sharp, lovely views (wide field views being a great compliment to my bigger scopes). Surprised at the number & quality of extras supplied - especially the star diagonal. I'm looking forward to more visual and potentially astrophotography uses in the future.
Read all the reviews, this is a great scope for th money. However, what the blurb doesn’t tell you,is all the extras that come in the box. There is a 2” to 1.25” adapter so you can use all your existing eyepieces. There is also a 2” T ring camera adapter and a short extension tube. All things I either did buy, or thought I’d have to buy extra, before opening the box
