iOptron SkyHunter AZ/EQ Goto Mount Package with Tripod and Extension Pier
Model: iop_skyhunter_eqPart Number: SHEQ
Fifteen years after releasing the innovational CubeTM AZ/EQ GoTo mount, the SkyHunterTM takes the next step toward perfection. It is the lightest and most compact full function portable goto mount in iOptron's exceptional history. Weighing in at only 2.9 lbs (including internal rechargeable battery), the SkyHunter TM is capable of supporting an 11 lbs payload in both equatorial and alt-azimuth modes. The SkyHunterTM mount features four tracking rates, 1X or sidereal, 1/2X for sky and landscape combined, solar and lunar. All 4 tracking rates work in both northern and southern hemispheres. The SkyHunterTM mount can be controlled by an iOS or Android SmartPhone/tablet, an optional 8410 hand controller, or a computer via ASCOM, INDI or embedded drive.
Please note: The iPolar shown in one of the photos is not included.
I bought this over a year ago as my move to equatorial mode tracking and astrophotography, having really only done visual astronomy and some lunar photography before. I chose this specifically because it's advertised as being for astrophotography, and because of the convenience of a built-in rechargeable battery. My alternative was the Sky-Watcher AZ GTi in EQ mode (spoiler alert: this is what I bought to replace the Sky Hunter, and I love it), but I was put off by the fact that the AZ GTi EQ mode setting appeared to be a work-around to push the mount beyond its intended purpose. So I bought the Sky Hunter. The pros are that it's light and compact, it's quiet, and I struggle to find any more. The cons are numerous. Starting with the minor irritating ones, the battery cover falls off all the time, leaving the delicate wiring of the battery open to being bashed while in transit, or leaving the battery to fall out and snag on the rig during imaging. The WiFi connection is useless, so I ended up having to connect with a USB cable to control the mount, which shuts down the possibility of ever connecting an external power supply for longer nights of imaging, as it charges with the sole USB port (which is inexplicably a mini USB type B port). Now onto the major issues. Firstly, and this is the one that made it a paperweight for me, it periodically loses tracking in the Dec axis for a period of 20 or 30 seconds, and the sub exposure being taken is ruined. Auto guiding pulls it back on track, but the image is useless. This would happen intermittently, sometimes every 3-4 minutes, meaning I would sometimes lose well over half of my images. This nearly killed the hobby for me. Secondly, the clutches are really difficult to operate, especially the RA axis. You have to use the counterweight bar as a lever to tighten and loosen it, and it's easy to tighten it so much that you can't undo it without feeling like you're going to break it. Thirdly, the whole thing is just flimsy. It wobbles on the clutch with the slightest touch.I spent months tweaking things after feedback from iOptron, and lost many of my previous clear nights to trouble shooting. I finally spent over 100 Euro in shipping fees sending it to the US to be repaired, and it has come back just as useless as before. I have cut my losses and now use an AZ GTi and it's brilliant. I nearly gave up on the hobby altogether, but really enjoy it again now.Do not buy.

Took a gamble when ordering, not many videos out there concerning this mount & was in a dilemma as to order this or the S/W AZ GTi. What swung it was this mount has internal power, can be used in eq or az straight from the box & has all necessary items included. Setting up was straight forward & the only lengthy part was initialising iOptron Commander. Once done, it works flawlessly once you get use to some small quirks (tension of clutches).Works like a charm with a large refractor + dslr, in doing so was pushing the weight bearing capacity to its upper envelope. Due to the weather conditions over the past month have only been able to use this item half a dozen times but each time has been marvellous.
