About this product
Model: starfield_solar_wedge_2
This Starfield Optics 2" Herschel solar wedge enables you to safely observe and photograph sunspots and granulation on the solar surface.
A Herschel solar wedge replaces your refractor telescope's regular 2" mirror or prism diagonal.
The Herschel optical system provides sharper views and images, with higher contrast and detail, than regular solar filters.
Features include a CNC-machined chassis, a large prism and a fully multicoated optical system.
Brightness is easily fine-tuned via the 2" polarising filter. Simply rotate the eyepiece holder. If you are imaging, you don't need to remove the camera.
Light energy is directed into a Polycrystalline Ceramic diffuser plate at the rear of the Wedge. This, together with cooling vents above the ceramic plate, provides safe and efficient cooling.
The Sun creates a bright spot on the rear diffuser. This spot can be used to centre the Sun in the field of view quickly and easily.
Accepts both 2" and 1.25" eyepieces, with included adapter.
Suitable for use with most modern CMOS cameras from ZWO or similar.

IMPORTANT
- Suitable for use only with refractor telescopes up to 150mm aperture.
- Not suitable for use with Petzval or other telescope designs with a rear lens element positioned close to the focuser drawtube.
- Not suitable for telescopes with plastic construction.
- Never mount a 2" filter in front of a Herschel Wedge! Any filter mounted into the solar energy beam so near the focus point will become extremely hot and damaged within seconds. Filters must only be mounted above the exiting side of the prism.
- Solar observing is dangerous and can be hazardous to eyesight. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Please use the correct equipment and carefully read the safety notes supplied with the products.

I am using the starfield herchell wedge with a skywatcher 72ed, at first I couldn't achieve focus with my zwo asi 224 mc camera, I tried a 1.25, 12.5 eyepiece and found that it would focus, the back focus is 115mm to the top of the 2inch turret and I realised that the 12.5 eyepiece front lens is on the focus point so I am now using a zwo 120 mini pushed in the 1.25 adapter to achieve focus. I hope this helps anyone who had the same problem

A well made and solidly built wedge. I found that when used with my Starfield 102 I attained the best results with the addition of a 7.5nm Baader solar continuum filter attached to my Morpheus eyepieces. I can then adjust the polarising filter by rotating the eyepiece holder to attain the best views for contrast etc. I’m very pleased with the results. First class service from FLO again.
Generally well made. Diffuser is fantastic help 27 June 2023 | Kevin
I have only used this once. The diffuser is great and really helps with pointing the telescope at the sun. The screw which is intened to lock the filter broke off. It is not very robust. Hence on four stars. I think I broke it when putting it back in its box. Fortunately it left a bit of the screw protruding so I was able to remove it with some pliers.
