About this product
Model: starfield_wedge_125
Part Number: Sol-Wedge-1
Starfield 1.25" Herschel Solar Wedge - Photography-ready.
The Herschel optical system provides sharper views and images, with higher contrast and detail, than regular solar filters.
The 1.25" polarising filter easily fine-tunes brightness. To do so, simply rotate the eyepiece holder. If you are imaging, you don't need to remove the camera.
Light energy is directed into a Polycrystalline Ceramic diffuser plate at the rear of the Wedge. This and the cooling vents above the ceramic plate provide safe and efficient cooling.
The Sun creates a bright spot on the rear diffuser. Using this spot, you can quickly and easily centre the Sun in the field of view.
Other features include a CNC-machined chassis, a large prism and a fully multicoated optical system.
Accepts 1.25" eyepieces.
Features
Versatile Application: Perfect for both visual and photographic exploration of the Sun.
Simple Setup: Easily attaches to refractor telescopes, replacing standard prisms or diagonals.
Easily centre the Sun in FOV: The Sun creates a bright spot on the rear diffuser, making it easy to centre the Sun in the field of view.
Superior Optical Quality: An anti-reflection coated prism ensures high-contrast, detailed solar views.
Integrated Filters: Features an adjustable CPL filter.
Photography-Ready: M42 threads facilitate straightforward camera attachment.
Optimised Aperture: 26.5mm clear aperture for enhanced light capture.
This 1.25" Herschel Solar wedge is best suited for use with doublet or triplet refractor telescopes with an objective diameter of up to 102mm / 4". For larger telescopes, we recommend the Starfield 2" Solar wedge model. It may not be compatible with all telescope models.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
-
This 1.25" model is suitable for use with refractor telescopes with an aperture of up to 102mm. (Please use the 2" model for telescopes with an aperture of up to 150mm.)
-
Due to the Sun's intense heat and energy, only refractor telescopes are advised for use with a Herschel Wedge.
-
It is NOT suitable for use with Petzval or other telescope designs with a rear lens element positioned close to the focuser drawtube.
-
It is NOT suitable for telescopes with plastic construction.
-
Never mount a filter in front of a Herschel Wedge! Any filter mounted into the solar energy beam near the focus point will become extremely hot and damaged within seconds. Filters must only be mounted above the exiting side of the prism.
-
Solar observing is dangerous and can damage eyesight. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Please use the correct equipment and carefully read the safety notes supplied with the products.

Starfield Herschel Wedge 1.25". 13 August 2024 | Ian
This is a good choice for a Hershel wedge and great value. Having previously owned the 2" version i can say that the 1.25" model is equally as good. The inbuilt ND3 and Polarising filter work together well with the Polarising filter being rotated in the eyepiece holder to achieve the desired brightness. I add a Baader Solar Continuum 7.5nm to my selected eyepiece to produce pin sharp sunspots and granulation of the Solar surface. Expedited swiftly to my door by FLO as is the norm.
Great solar viewing experience! 04 March 2024 | Jerome
I’ve only ever used a glass solar filter that goes over the front of the telescope. Could only use it with that scope since it was too small for all my other scopes to use. Ordered this solar wedge from FLO and I’ve been completely satisfied with it. Love the built in polarizing filter which makes it easy to get the intensity of the sun just right in the eyepiece.
