About this product
iOptron HEM15 (without iPolar)
The HEM15 is a new addition to iOptron's Hybrid Harmonic Drive Equatorial GoTo Mounts range, delivering excellent performance in an ultra-portable package.
Utilising a state-of-the-art strain wave drive technology for the RA movement in tandem with a backlash-free DEC worm/belt drive design, the HEM15 delivers unparalleled weight-to-payload efficiency.
The mount head weighs only 2.5kg (5.5 lbs) yet can carry a max payload of 8.2kg (18 lbs) without needing a counterweight.
The black anodised all-metal CNC machined body provides a rugged platform that will perform at the highest level for many years.
Unique features such as an electronic friction break and power-down memory enable the mount to stop and resume a GoTo slew safely or continue tracking even after an abrupt power loss (no need to realign and restart).
A computer can control the HEM15 mount via ASCOM/Commander for a Windows PC or a third-party INDI driver for MacOS), a SmartPhone/Tablet via iOptron Commander Lite or an App like SkySafari, or a Raspberry Pi device via INDI driver.
NOTE: Product shows mount with iPolar fitted. The iPolar is not included but is available separately.

As small and light as it gets 24 July 2024 | Michael
Ive been living with my HEM15 for a year now and can say I love this little thing! Whats super impressive is that its smaller and lighter than the Star Adventurer I upgraded from. I'm a lazy astrophotographer. Big heavy mounts are not for me. I tried it once and nearly gave up entirely on the hobby. I now have a Zenithstar 61 mounted on my HEM15 with an ASIair, guider and an EAF. All sitting on a carbon fibre tripod. The whole thing weighs 10kg! I can be outside an imaging within half an hour. Happy days.
Big shout out to FLO who gave me a preposterously generous amount of time after sales to help me set it up. It was guiding ok out of the box at around 1" but after following advice form FLO it will now happily guide between 5" - 8" all night ( assuming seeing allows it ).
TL;DR - are you lazy? Can you not be hassled with heavy things? This is the mount for you!
Light-weight with great load capasity. 08 July 2024 | Geir
I've been reading reviews and struggling to decide if the iOptron HEM15 would be a good mount in my ever growing collection of astro gear
Finally decided to push the "Add to cart" and "Checkout".
Will be some time until I can do anything else than "dry tests" inside my living room as it will be until mid August I might have dark nights again (I live above 60 degrees north).
So far it looks good. Works fine with the AsiAir Plus via the dreaded hand-controller+USB.
I wish all astro manufacturers stop making mounts with hand controllers and ST4 ports. It's like carbs on cars/motorbikes
But the mount works well and is very easy to bring along for travel (with the iOptron carbon tripod).
Ioptron or not to Ioptron 18 March 2024 | Paul
Reasons to buy the Ioptron.....its £500 cheaper than the zwo am3, no it doesn't have a harmonic drive on the declination? For the last 30 years I've used only worm drives on both axis because that was what we had coupled with smart drive (periodic error correction). The hem15 has harmonic drive on the right ascension and a supposedly back lash free belt declination drive, with decent alignment via a computer software or asi air type gadget a can't see your going to notice the lack of harmonic on the declination unless your up there with the pros. The ioptron did strike me as a bit fiddly to set up initially and I had to select the hem 27 on my asi Air but it hooked up instantly and aligned and function flawlessly first night. There are a few screws to relocate and the dove tail clamp retaining bolt appears a bit flimsy , you do need to arrange the clamping arrangement so it clears the ra housing (if you pull the lever up it can be repositioned or it will collide with the ra housing. On a very positive note you can buy the hem 15, a stellalyra 6" f4 reflector, a hotch laser and the matching coma corrector for about the same price as the am3....so I did !

This is a huge step up from the AZ-GTI I have been using for the past few years - it looks vastly better made, it sounds vastly better made, it's quick and strong and tracks like an ace. I am using it exclusively with an ASIAIR so can't comment much on its native software.
Adding iPolar to an HEM15 28 November 2023 | David
I bought an HEM15 without iPolar, on the basis that I could use the one on my GEM45 (which I don't use). FLO had pointed me towards an isolated compatability chart which confirmed this was possible. It took under an hour and works perfectly. Thanks FLO!
The HEM15 is well made and has similarities to the GEM45. I've only had one short evening under the stars but it showed it could guide to 1 arc-sec. It handled my 65phq refractor happily.
