About this product

Model:  zwo_ir_pass_125
Part Number:  ZWO-850IR1.25

ZWO 1.25″ IR 850nm Pass Filter suitable for IR sensitive cameras.

The ZWO 1.25″ IR 850nm Pass Filter is suitable for IR sensitive cameras. You don’t need to debayer and get the full resolution of this sensor when use it with a color camera such as the ZWO ASI224MC or ASI185MC, because the QE responce  of sensor beyond 850nm is all the same (i.e. infrared light passes through the Bayer colour layer). So you can use a colour camera as a mono camera when using this filter, just don’t forget to keep the WB_R and WB_B settings to 50 (no White Balance applied).

Note: This filter is for photographic use only (the human eye cannot see IR light).

The IR Pass filter was intended to improve lunar imaging by reducing the effects of the Earth's atmosphere. Standard screw thread and thickness so easily fitted in filter wheel. Blocked out most light so exposures increased but not excessively and the video caught was much sharper than the unfiltered capture. Definitely worth it for this target and going to experiment on others.

Works very well with my ZWO ASI290MC Camera. Very pleased.

Works really well.

I have a few use cases for this filter:
1. for use on planetary objects for video capture under poorer seeing - and this works quite well for that role, even if it results in a monochrome image with most sensors.
2. for IR-illuminated terrestrial views where visible light is an issue, such as wildlife tracking in the back yard.
3. For more consistent guiding on stars under poorer seeing, as IR is less affected by seeing so any movement of the star is more likely to be mount-related than seeing-related. Lower brightness for sure, but this just works pretty well for me.

This filter works really well for both of these purposes. Also, interestingly, using the filter in daytime with an ASI224 makes that effecrively a mono camera and one can get the white vegetation and black sky as per IR film which makes for really interesting time lapses.
