Makes a very good high-powered spotting scope 03 January 2025 | Alan
Looking for a telescope which I could use as a high-powered spotting scope at over 100x, I thought, on the basis of experience with other small Maksutovs, that this would fit the bill. It has proven to be very satisfactory for this use. It's cheaper and lighter than a purpose-made spotting scope, but maintains a very acceptable image at 138x with a 9mm eyepiece and a good 90 degree erecting prism. I haven't tested it on astronomical subjects so far, but this is what it's primarily intended for, and on the basis of the tests on terrestrial targets, I can't see any reason to have doubts about the performance here.

I bought on a whim as something that I can use in the classroom with my 6th form students, and also with my daughter (7). However, I've been very impressed with the OTA. It's small, very portable, and gives some spectacular views. The included eyepieces are fine, I'm using it with my own Meade eyepieces, and the finder is quick and simple to setup. As a grab and go visual scope for planets and the moon, you can't go wrong really.

I bought this mak to scratch an itch. I used to have a mak 127 and always regret selling it so just wanted something lightweight to fit on my AZ5 mount. I have only been able to use it for 2 brief sessions but it punches well above its weight and although the planets are receding I've have some cracking views of Jupiter and Mars through the scope. I have also been having fun double star hunting and M42 looked lovely through the scope too. I'm thoroughly happy with my purchase, if I coukd of afforded it I would of gone with the 102 but the 90 really is a fantastic scope. I can carry my skymax 90 on the AZ5 and celestron 1.25inch steel tripod in one hand. Perfect for some grab and go visual use or like I attached my dslr and taken images of Mars and Jupiter. The service from FLO was excellent, ordered one night and delivered the next 👍

Mine surprisingly came with a nice green vixen dovetail..the scope performs similarly to my 72ed almost as sharp too..takes 20 mins to properly cool down to near pin point stars but I now just leave it outside the porch till Im ready to use it so NO issue there..Its great on the Moon and Doubles.
Saturn looks great even in ordinary seeing. The 25 Kellner ? is great on globs esp m22,N6752,N6397 ..some brightness and resolution there.
Got it for a take anywhere on an Ol SLT mount, its fun easily takes a 5mm Dual ED on Saturn and Izar here in Sydney.. thats 250x !! An 8mm dual ED is great with this scope as is the 25mm dual ED.
The Martian Polar caps , the Syrtis and the long sinus meridianus on Mars will be fun soon as they can take magnification VERY well
When I dont feel like lugging out my big Apo or C925 etc this is still fun...Its a lil pocket rocket!

Bought this to scratch an itch to be honest as various people rated them on youtube and elsewhere. As I've always been a lifelong reflector/refractor guy, the SCT seemed a total deviation from the norm. They have some shortcomings like everything else but these can be overcome fairly easily these days.
The SkyMax90 has proven very capable for lunar/planetary so far, even with some imaging. With decent lenses and barlow, the details stand out pretty sharply. The lenses provided are ok ish and comes in a useful travelling holdall which will make for a perfect grab and go setup. My first purchase from First Light and the service is excellent. Looking forward to picking up some more goodies from these guys!

Am very happy with the performance and the portability of the telescope which I have mated with a skywatcher EQ1 TRIPOD.
