QSI 760 Full Fornat Mono CMOS Imaging Camera

For nearly 20 years, QSI has been synonymous with high-quality, desirable cameras for astronomers. Now, in 2024, they proudly announce their 700 Series.

The QSI 760 features Sony's high-resolution Mono IMX455 CMOS Sensor, which provides outstanding image quality, resolution, and sensitivity.

Please see the recent BBC Sky at Night Review of the QSI 760 Camera

In two decades, much has changed beyond recognition. Sensors are now back-illuminated CMOS with native 16-bit digitisation. QE is an impressive 90%, and readout is a speedy 120 million pixels per second over USB3, a performance that once was unimaginable. What is maintained by QSI’s newest cameras is the integrated design, attention to detail, and bulletproof reliability. In the design of the 700 series, QSI has taken their best technology. Filterwheels are mechanically indexed to ensure the most precise locations and perfect flat fields. The fused silica window is dew-resistant and is coated on both sides with high transmission anti-reflective coating to minimise halos. The cameras use a highly efficient 2-stage Peltier cooler that draws less current and delivers more cooling than some other cameras.

The QSI 760 is the company's flagship product. The full-frame IMX455 is widely regarded as the premium sensor for astronomers.

The integrated 2”/50mm filter wheel minimises back focus, which is essential for the broadest compatibility with focal reducers. Thanks to the integrated filter wheel, 2 USB2 in sockets, and power out, cable clutter is reduced.

Power sockets have threaded connections for maximum reliability.

QSI cameras are designed in Norwich, UK, by a dedicated team with many years of experience in astronomy. Skills include 10-layer high-speed PCB design and platform-independent software code base. The cameras are manufactured in a state-of-the-art facility in Lisbon, PT. Quality is controlled using an ISO9001:2015 accredited management system. The factory makes extensive use of solar power and takes seriously the potential impact of manufacturing on the environment, gaining ISO 14001 accreditation.

Features

  • State of the art low noise: With noise levels approaching 1e, the 700 series is among the best designs available, opening the possibility of shorter exposures and keeping a great dynamic range. Flexible gain modes allow customised configurations while keeping it simple.
  • Integrated filter wheel: Following on the QSI DNA, maximising integration was a priority. The integrated filter wheel allows for the reduction of the back focus required, and this can be very important when additional optical elements are used, like field flatteners of focal reducers, which have strict back focal requirements. The entire footprint is also compact and lightweight, an important aspect for some telescope designs where size and strain on the focuser needs to be limited. All power and communications cables are internal, meaning less clutter to deal with.
  • High Quality Chamber seals: Reliability is of utmost importance for QSI, therefore keeping moisture out of the sensor chamber was part of the design. Using proprietary technologies and testing mechanisms, the 700 series features low sensor chamber maintenance, something very important for the installation in remote observatories where interventions can be expensive.
  • Excellent cooling efficiency and stability: Efficient usage of energy is an important aspect of QSI as a brand. The 700 series have the lowest power requirements of the industry, making battery powered imaging sessions last longer. Furthermore, maximum cooling is an industry leading 45C below ambient, excellent for hot summer nights present in some remote locations.
  • Flexible cable management: The 700 series feature robust threaded power connectors, both on the input and output, ensuring reliable connections for camera and accessories. The provided USB hub can be used to further reduce the cable drag on the system.
  •  Mechanical tilt adjustment: Even if the sensors are leveled to high accuracies, there may be times where there is a necessity to compensate for other misalignments within the optical system. The 700 series have an included leveling method to assist in achieving a perfect orthogonal field.
  • Custom OAG unit: Designed for compatibility with large 3" focusers, the OAG unit can easily be customised for integration with observatory class telescope focusers. It features a helical focuser for the guide camera, and different adapters for different threads. With a large prism, the OAG can illuminate a 2/3" class sensor so finding guide stars is easy even with long focal lengths. As with the camera, the OAG features a tilt adjustment mechanism.
  • Robust construction: Made from aircraft grade aluminium machined to tight tolerances, with an Argon gas filled sensor chamber and Quartz optical window, the QSI 700 series is a platform for those who treasure great engineering and excellent performance in all situations.
