Fun little gadget 29 September 2023 | Stian
I ordered this little microscope along with some new optics for my telescope, so I've been playing around with it all afternoon while it rains outside.
You basically have two levels of zoom on the device itself - keep turning the focus and it will go out of focus and then come back into focus with higher magnification level.
Great fun using it hand-held, looking close at random stuff, getting it up on a large screen, and playing around taking pictures and video.
The additional stand makes it useful for other purposes; eg. when I start sifting through the dust I gathered with my big magnet (hunting for micrometeorites), it will be essential.
Image quality is actually not too shabby, for a fairly inexpensive device I think it does a quite decent job and I'm enjoying using it for some macro photography/video.
Colours seem to come out pretty accurate, as well.
The first thing you may want to check is if there's a "B" printed on the barrel, as there are two different versions of the microscope and accompanying software.
I received the 44308-B variant. The software was recently updated 03/2023 and it works fine on Windows 10 and 11.
As far as Celestron's MicroCapture Pro software, the UI can be a little clunky, but it's alright.
One little niggle - I wish there was a way to preserve aspect ratio when fullscreen/maximizing the video.
The native resolution of the microscope is 4:3 so for instance on the 16:9 monitor in front of me, the image will be stretched if I maximize it.
The microscope itself is actually plug-and-play, though, without any drivers required.
Since it shows up as an imaging device in any relevant software, I will be getting some creative use out of it as well
Overall very fun little gadget.
