This mount is recommended for small to medium-aperture instruments up to the Skywatcher Skymax 127 Maksutov in size.
I've had at least one AZ4 since they first appeared on the market. It's such a sturdy mount and it supports loads easily in excess of what it's supposed to. Mine is currently used with my 80, 103 and 125mm refractors for grab and go. In the past I've used it with 6inch f8 Newts, up to 6inch SCs and even an 8inch Mak on one occassion to test the scope. I bought one this time as I wanted a second one. I will use it mainly for drying out and storing my StellaMira 125mm f7.8 ED on it indoors when I bring it in after observing. At the currentl bargain price of £99 on the lighter tripod, everyone should have one. Many people will already have a more heavy mount, like that for the EQ5, which they can use with it for heavier scopesIt also makes a good spotting scope mount which needs supporting from underneath by using the supplied L shaped bracket that comes with it.
i could not be more pleased , i have coupled the az4 mount with 80 mm x 560 ed refractor . they go together perfectly . 10 out of 10.
Remarkably solid for its weight – the tripod stands about 75cm at its lowest and 125cm when fully extended. The mount is smooth and worked well with both a spotting scope and a Zenithstar 70. An upgrade from a lightweight camera tripod I had been using and more stable. Certainly good for grab and go… for both stars and wildlife watching.
Really, it's kinda like a dobsonian on a tripod.
I am very pleased with this purchase. The Product Information describes it very well and as well as very smooth action in both axes there is no backlash and the scope stays where it is pointed. I have a Vixen 80Mf f11.4 refractor mounted on it and if the OTA or mount is deliberately tapped the vibration dies down in a second or so, which is excellent. It is quite compact with the legs collapsed when not in use and can be taken outside and set up with the minimum of fuss. All in all, I'm very pleased with it.Dave
