The Acuter Elite Phoenix 40 is a safe solar telescope with a 40mm aperture front-mounted Etalon for observing active solar prominences and other solar details in the H-alpha band. It performs at 0.6 Angstrom or better.
With the etalon fitted, you can view the Sun in the narrow H-alpha bandwidth. The observer is rewarded with awe-inspiring real-time views of our nearest star, revealing details such as solar flares, prominences, spicules, surface granularity, sun spots and more!
With the etalon removed, the telescope can also be used as an 80/400 achromatic refractor telescope for regular astronomical observations.
It is supplied with a Star Diagonal, a Red Dot Finder and a universal smartphone camera adaptor, so you can use your smartphone to make a photographic record of your observations.
The Acuter Elite Phoenix 40 conforms to and meets the transmission requirements of ISO 12312-2:2015 (filters for the direct observation of the Sun).
Safety Information
Please exercise extreme caution when observing the Sun. Improper usage and practices can result in serious and even permanent eye damage! Always use in accordance with the instructions.
What a fantastic device! I decided to try a bit of solar photography for the first time and bought the Acuter Elite Phoenix 40 H-Alpha Solar scope from FLO, along with the Sky-Watcher SolarQuest mount, pier and tripod. It was a breeze to set up, attach the scope and camera, power on the SolarQuest, point it just to the left of the Sun, and leave it for a few minutes to get its bearings. Then fine-tune using the solar finder on the scope, do a rough focus, tune the etalon and fine-focus. You need a gentle touch on the focuser, it's a bit industrial but it works! I've sent FLO some images that I took within 30 minutes of starting, I hope they can add them to the review, but never did I expect it to be so easy. I took several videos using my ASI678MC and ASIAir, setting the camera to record AVI raw video and getting a full disk with that combination, binning 2x2 and setting the colour camera to monochrome. Even this setup using a colour camera, (mono cameras are recommended,) when processed through Astrostakkert and WaveSharp 2, gave fantastic results for a first attempt.I went for the Acuter Elite Phoenix because of the combination of price and the few good reviews on the internet. It has not let me down, it's so easy to set up, use and get sharable results with not a lot of processing. The whole thing from setting up, and acquiring the video, to stacking and processing, took little time. Even the live view gives a good image, I had a plane fly through one video and you can see both the plane and solar features. If you want to dip your toes into solar, I can't recommend this enough. I have used other small solar scopes, and for a starter solar scope, I think you would find this hard to beat. Yes, the focuser is industrial but the etalon is easy to tune with a max rotation of a quarter of a turn. I did try tuning for prominences but ended up with the etalon about in the middle, which gave me a satisfactory overall image. I did not use it visually but I did use live view through the camera. It was all great fun and I'm looking forward to doing more solar imaging and zooming in with a Barlow.
