Plossl eyepieces are often underrated because most owners experience only the budget versions supplied with telescopes.
After extensively testing various designs with aberration-free telescopes, such as the TOA and Mewlon CRS range, Takahashi concluded their original Plossl design performs best. In this type of eyepiece design, without a Smythe lens, the Petzval sum cannot be corrected to zero, so the star image cannot be perfect at the far edge of the field, but astigmatism and image curvature are controlled so deformation of the star image at field edge is minimised.
The image is extremely sharp from the centre of the field to around halfway to the field edge. The star image at the field edge does bulge, but quality remains high for visual observation, enabling the observer to focus on the centre of the field of view. The design also works well with a barlow lens.
The TPL Series uses highly refractive, low-dispersion glass, and All lens surfaces feature a multilayer anti-reflection coating that transmits more than 99% across the visible light range.
Chromatic aberration at the centre is around half that of the Abbe series and two-thirds of the LE series.
Eye relief is approximately 70% of the focal length, and the apparent field of view is 48°.
The eyepiece bodies have a high-quality matte finish and an interior design that prevents stray light from entering.
The included rubber eyecups provide comfortable viewing and can be folded back when using eyeglasses.
Available infive 1.25" focal lengths: 6mm, 9mm,12.5mm, 18mm and 25mm and from January 2024 also available in 33mm and 50mm (2") focal lengths
