About this product

Model:  daystar_fc120
Part Number:  FC120

Taking a Flat field reference image removes the effects of dust spots, vignetting, and filter uniformity.

The DayStar FlatCap is a Gaussian diffuser that is temporarily installed over the front of your telescope when taking flat field reference images.

By strongly blurring the Sun, the only details you will see in the reference image are from defects in your imaging train that can be removed in software.

Specifications

  • Construction: Spun Aluminium mounting ring with polymer diffuser

  • Intensity distribution: Gaussian

  • Divergence angle: 4 degrees FWHM

  • Exposure time adjustment factor: 100x longer

  • Maximum field of view: 1 degree with Sun backlight

  • Wavelength transmission range: 350-800nm

  • Operating temperature: -10 to 100°C (14-212°F)

FlatCap is sold by inside diameter of the mounting cap. Measure the outside diameter of the frontmost component of your telescope or ERF, and then round up to the next larger size. For example, a telescope with a 160mm front should use model FC170, and then optionally install the included felt pads for a secure fit.

IMPORTANT: This DayStar FlatCap Gaussian diffuse filter must be used together with a suitable purpose-made solar filter.

Convenient and effective at killing sensor pattern noise
06 July 2023  |

Solar flats can be taken pretty effectively using methods such as defocusing, or maintaining focus and using cling film or cereal packets. That will usually get rid of dust bunnies. But having tried taking flats using Sharpcap’s flats tool without and with the Flat Cap I’m very happy I got the cap. I’ve been using a camera with an IMX178 chip and had been unlucky to have the sensor pattern noise, with intermittent success killing it with flats taken by cruder methods. The cap just killed it very effectively. Maybe it’s the clear exposure guidance provided. In any case the pattern noise shows clearly on the flats and cancels it in the image. It is also very convenient to just pop this on the scope. I’ve given it 4/5 as if your dew shield diameter is towards the lower end of the range for any given size the cap remains very loose even after attaching the supplied spacer foam, and it is a bit pricey.
